"I've learned only one thing: No matter how hard it is to do it, it's harder not to do it." - Gloria Steinem, political activist, writer, and editor
"Give it all you've got!" "Go for it!" "No pain, no gain!"
These are the statements we hear at times from those people who have devoted their lives to motivating and inspiring others. They can make it sound easy when they say to just do it - whatever 'it' might be. Yet it is very difficult for some of us to do just that. We are held back for some reason and at times it can be baffling.
Fear of the unknown can be one of the reasons why we hesitate. We are more comfortable with what we know, even if what we know is not good for us. We may stay in relationships longer than necessary, we may remain in a dead-end job for too long, or we may simply put off making decisions that need to be made in a timely manner. Sometimes the only thing we can do is to move forward and do 'it' anyway. In most cases, our fear of moving forward is greater than the level of difficulty surrounding the task at hand. We usually magnify the challenge and after we look back on an experience we realize we made mountains out of molehills much of the time.
In the future, maybe we could set our fears aside, evaluate the project or challenge at hand with a realistic approach, and move forward with determination and purpose. This is how we will learn and grow. It will bring us results and lessons that will allow us to continue to improve our lives. Let's give it a try!
Today I will release my fear of the unknown and I will set forth to do what is mine to do, no matter how difficult it may be. I am grateful.
