"There are moments in life when keeping silent becomes a fault, and speaking an obligation: a civic duty, a moral challenge, a categorical imperative from which we cannot escape." - Oriana Fallaci, journalist
It's not always easy to know when to say something and when to keep quiet. There are times when we want to help a friend or warn a family member about a situation but it may not be in our best interest to do so. There are times, however, when it is imperative that we speak up, regardless of how others might react.
I've struggled in the past with deciding when to speak and when to keep quiet. I've learned to pause and do nothing when I'm in doubt. I've learned to run certain things by a close friend so that I'm not rushing into something that is actually none of my business. One of my friends likes to ask me if "it's in my hula hoop". I love that question because it allows me to think twice before I interfere in a friend's life. I believe that everyone has the right to make their own decisions and their own mistakes. I had to learn by making my own choices and that privilege should be granted to all.
So, as I reflect on the quote above, I am reminded that I must respect my friends and family by keeping my opinions to myself. When necessary, I will always speak up, but today I understand that "live and let live" is one of the slogans that helps me get along with everyone. Today I pray that I will allow people to live their own lives and that I may always seek to be a kind and loving friend.
