"While the spirit of neighborliness was important on the frontier because neighbors were so few, it is even more important now because our neighbors are so many." - Lady Bird Johnson, first lady (1963 - 1969) and activist
We all need each other to get through this life. We can begin by being good neighbors which will create a community of peace and serenity. After that, the contentment can spread to cities, states, and countries. All we have to do is envision it and live as if it has already happened. The benefits will come. I'm reminded of the saying "it takes a village" when I think about this quote from Lady Bird Johnson.
I grew up in a big city neighborhood where neighbors believed in the "village" concept. I remember playing outside during the warmer months with lots of people sitting outside on their stoops, chatting with the neighbors and watching kids play stick ball, hopscotch, and tag. I sometimes miss those days. I don't know if the old neighborhood is still like that now, but it was fun back in the day. Of course, everyone knew everyone's business too. I guess that's to be expected. :)
Today I pray that the "spirit of neighborliness" becomes contagious so it spreads like wildfire. I am committed to having a high level of this spirit for all those I meet in the coming days, weeks, months, and years. Amen.
