Freedom To Read

"With a library you are free, not confined by temporary political climates. It is the most democratic of institutions because no one - but no one at all - can tell you what to read and when and how." - Doris Lessing, Nobel Prize-winning novelist and playwright

There are times when I realize just how much I take for granted.  This is a beautiful quote that reminds me it is a blessing and a freedom to be able to choose what I read, how I read, and when I read.  There are some who don't have this liberty. I am fortunate to have this freedom at all times.

When I was a little girl, I loved going to the library.  I used to bring home a bag full of books to read every week.  I loved reading. I enjoyed getting into the story and escaping from what I thought were troubles way back when. Of course, I didn't have any real troubles back when I was a young girl, but my perception told me otherwise.

Reading allowed me to focus on the characters in the books and I enjoyed following their story lines. I grew to love mysteries more than anything and that love continues to this day. I still go the library frequently. Sometimes I listen to books-on-tape in my car because I drive so much; that's fun too. But, for me, there's nothing like sitting down somewhere quiet and reading a great book.  I'm grateful for my love of reading. It brings me comfort and allows me time to think about something other than my own challenges and activities for a certain period. Going to the library and reading truly is a freedom that should not be taken for granted. I'm glad I got to see this quote to remind me of that today.
