"You're not obligated to win. You're obligated to keep trying to do the best you can every day." - Marian Wright Edelman, lawyer and founder of Children's Defense Fund
Well, this fills me with a sense of relief. I always believed that life was about winning. But, as it says here, it's not about the winning; it is about doing my best every day. I can do that. Some days are better than others but I think that's normal for everyone.
There are days when I feel as if I can't do anything right and other days when I feel as if I can't do anything wrong. I've always been my own harshest critic when my days go awry. It's not necessary to be so tough on myself though. I can honestly say that I give my best effort to everything I do. I don't win at everything I take on but when I do win, it's a great feeling. It's always better when I get to share the victory with my friends. I owe everything to my friends - they have loved me through all of my ups and downs. They are supportive and helpful and just love me as I am. That allows me to let go of any need to feel obligated to win.
Something else occurred to me as I read this quote. I've found myself, at times, falling back on the excuse that I'm just doing the best I can do. I must be careful not to use that as a crutch when I am tackling anything in my life. There have been times when I knew what to do but I chose not to because it would require extra effort on my part. Then I would give the lame excuse that I did the best I could. That isn't good enough for me today. If I am TRULY giving my best to everything I do in my life, I won't have to make excuses.
The bottom line for me is being able to live up to my own word. That's a priority for me today. I give it my best. Thank you my friends who help me to achieve great results. I am nothing without God and my friends.
Today I will not focus on competing for a win. Today I will simply do the best I can to do as much as possible for others. I will leave the results up to the Universe. I am grateful.
