"The most beautiful discovery true friends make is that they can grow separately without growing apart." - Elisabeth Foley, writer
This is one of my favorite quotes to date. I have been blessed in recent years with so many friendships that mean the world to me. And, this is coming from a person who never really had any true friends growing up.
There was a simple reason why I didn't have this in my life. I wouldn't allow myself to BE a friend to anyone. I was ashamed of who I was and I didn't want anyone to get to know me. They might find out I wasn't perfect! I couldn't imagine experiencing that kind of pain so I just did without friends for the most part. There were a couple of people who tried to be my friend and I did the best that I could back then. But it was very lonely for me in my teens and as I entered young adulthood.
As I've matured, I've learned (through a lot of prayer, meditation, and tears) that I'm a good person who's never going to be perfect. But I am worth loving, I'm fun to be with, and I appreciate every single friendship I have. This quote brings to mind the many friends who are in my life today. We are all consciously striving to grow spiritually and emotionally in order to be of maximum service to our Higher Power. This task takes us in all different directions, yet we remain connected. Isn't that the best news ever?! Thank you God for teaching me how to be a friend among friends.
