"When suffering comes, we yearn for some sign from God, forgetting we have just had one." - Mignon McLaughlin, writer
It's interesting to think about how suffering tends to point us toward God in the first place. Many times I've prayed only when I was in trouble and needed help in a bad situation. I've been told these are "foxhole" prayers and I used to pray them all the time. Maybe that's what Ms. McLaughlin is referring to here. Once suffering begins, then my thoughts turn to a Higher Power. Hmmm.
I've come to recognize that prayer as a daily activity, in good times and in bad, always reminds me of my priorities. I don't want to be a person who only cries out when I'm in pain. My connection to God grows stronger the more I pray. It's become automatic for me and it helps me to maintain a sense of balance and serenity. I find that I'm much more capable of living in the moment when I'm actively praying on a daily basis.
So, for today, I will pray and ask for guidance from the God of my understanding. I trust that this will work today because it has always worked in the past. I am grateful.
