"Too much indulgence has ruined thousands of children; too much love not one." - Fanny Fern (Sara Willis Parton), 19th century columnist
Love is the most important force in my life today. It is powerful and it has changed my entire outlook on life. For that I am grateful.
I recognize now that loving myself is an important part of the equation if I am to enjoy a fulfilling life. I never felt lovable in my younger years. I'm not sure why but it was evident to me that my opinion of myself was negative - very negative. Several years ago, a good friend pointed out to me that if God loves me just as I am, then certainly I could love myself that way as well. Who am I to contradict God?
It's taken me several years to get my head wrapped around this concept, but now that it's sunk in, I recognize the value behind it. Everyone has their own conception of a Higher Power. Some believe in God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Others believe in Buddha or Mohammad or Allah. Others believe in the Great Spirit or the Universe. The value of knowing that one's personal Higher Power loves them just as they are is priceless, regardless of what Higher Power you have in your life. For me, knowing that the God of my understanding loves me just as I am allows me to accept my humanness and strive to be the best human I can be.
Indulgence is alluring at times, but I will choose love every time. And I will love all those I come in contact with each day to the best of my ability. We are all connected to each other in some way. For that I am truly grateful.
