Passion For Reading

"The greatest gift is a passion for reading. It is cheap, it consoles, it distracts, it excites, it gives you knowledge of the world and experience of a wide kind. It is a moral illumination." - Elizabeth Hardwick, writer and critic

I have always loved to read. When I was a little girl, I would go to the library every week and challenge myself to read as many books as possible. I would get lost in the plots and I could read for hours on end.

Lately, I have been listening to books-on-tape (or CD) rather than reading books. I still love getting lost in the stories, but I'm finding it difficult to sit quietly and simply read a book that's grabbed my interest. It may be a phase that I'm going through. Maybe I need to practice sitting quietly so that I can get back to reading more. I'm not sure what the answer will be, but I'm sure this too shall pass.

It may simply be a case of learning to let go of my worries so that my mind can be freed up to concentrate on reading again. I have been known to worry more than I need to throughout my day. I also think I need to remember that it's not necessary to be DOING something every waking moment. Sitting down and relaxing while reading a book may be just the thing to do occasionally.

Well, I guess if I'm writing this here, it means I need to act upon these thoughts. So, I'm off to read a book now. Wish me well. :)
