"I don't believe an accident of birth makes people sisters or brothers. It makes them siblings, gives them mutuality of parentage. Sisterhood and brotherhood is a condition people have to work at." - Maya Angelou, poet, educator, historian, best-selling author, and activist
I never thought of sisterhood or brotherhood as a condition, but after reading this quote it makes sense to me. Siblings don't necessarily share the bond that sisterhood or brotherhood truly brings to people.
I've had some very special people come into my life over the years. We've been blessed with a bond that cannot be broken. We are not related by blood but we will be there for each other no matter what. These relationships do require attention and care. We don't stay close by ignoring each other and not "working" at the friendship. I do consider these people to be my brothers/sisters in every sense of the word. If I am to believe Ms. Angelou's statement above, which I do, then I am truly grateful for this "condition"!
