"I think there's just one kind of folks. Folks." - Harper Lee, writer and winner of the 2007 Presidential Medal of Freedom
I love this statement. We're all the same - we're all just people trying to be the best we can be.
Acceptance is what comes to mind as I re-read this quote. My acceptance of others has grown exponentially as my spirituality has developed. The closer I get to God, the more loving and accepting I am of those I meet each day. It's amazing how that works. If I am feeling disconnected from God for some reason, then I am extremely intolerant of others for the most part. I must mention here that I said "feeling disconnected". I am never actually disconnected from God since Spirit lives within and never leaves me. However, if I'm honest, there are days when my feelings lie to me and tell me I'm alone and without a Higher Power of any sort. I've learned to ignore those feelings. They are not facts.
There is one other part to this acceptance concept for me. I choose to accept myself just as I am today. I am a "folks" just as much as the next person. I believe that I am one of God's creations and I have a divine Spirit within that guides me through the day, every day. Acceptance is for all. I love my life and I owe that joyful feeling to my ability to accept life on life's terms. I am so grateful.
