"Preconceived notions are the locks on the door to wisdom." - Merry Browne, writer
"Contempt prior to investigation" is the phrase that comes to mind when I read this quote. Herbert Spencer stated that this contempt can keep us "in everlasting ignorance". That is never good.
I want to have an open mind these days. I've learned that staying stuck in my own head doesn't do me any good whatsoever. There was a time in my life when I thought I had all the answers but that wasn't true and it didn't get me very far either. I found myself alone, confused, and bewildered about life all the way around. Some friends tried to help me after I hit my emotional bottom but I was still skeptical about anyone else telling me my ideas might be wrong. It was a very scary time for me.
Fortunately, when the pain got even greater and I felt hopeless and helpless, I became willing to entertain the idea that maybe my way of thinking was wrong and that I could learn something from others. Slowly my thinking changed because I followed suggestions given by people I trusted who led the kind of life that I wanted to lead, and, surprisingly enough, my life improved.
Today I love living with an open mind and an open heart as well. The trick for me turned out to be praying to my Higher Power for the willingness to be willing. That's what it took for me to turn my life around. If it worked for me, it can work for anyone. Open the doors to wisdom today and let go of any preconceived notions you may have. It could be the best gift you ever give yourself.
