"Since when do you have to agree with people to defend them from injustice?" - Lillian Hellman, playwright (the first woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for Writing Original Screenplay) and activist
I have often marveled at the difficult work done by attorneys who have attempted to help those who have been treated unjustly or those who have been convicted when they are not guilty. I'm glad I don't have to face those challenges on a regular basis. I don't think I could adequately handle that type of responsibility.
I choose to show respect to everyone I meet on a daily basis. They may not believe in the same things that I do, but I do not have to judge them for their beliefs. If I treat everyone the same, then I know that I am doing what is right for me. This is the best I can do. I have found that, for me, I need to put judgment aside. I find myself feeling grateful that I am not working in the legal system, having to fight for the rights of someone who may have committed a crime. Injustice is not a principle which is okay for some people and not okay for others in my book. Injustice is wrong - period. That is simply my opinion and it is okay if others feel differently.
Today I will remember to treat everyone with the same respect that I would want to receive from them. I will leave the correction of injustices to the professionals. I am grateful for the ability to make these choices in my life. I am filled with gratitude.
