Delightful Friendships

"Perhaps the most delightful friendships are those in which there is much agreement, much disputation, and yet more personal liking." - George Eliot, nineteenth-century novelist

Friends have saved my life, over and over again. The friends in my life can be counted on to listen when I need to be heard, to make suggestions when I don't know what to do, and, when I am down, to love me until I can love myself again. They are amazing folks!

With my friends, I don't have many disputes at all. We will have discussions and I am happy to say that I am not afraid to express my opinion. We don't have disputes though.I have learned to accept people as they are along with the opinions they have, even if their opinions are not in line with mine. There is a beautiful respect between us all and we are able to care for and nurture each other without getting caught up in our differences. Today we focus on our similarities.

Personal liking among friends certainly goes a long way. Of course, if we didn't have a liking for each other, the friendships would just fizzle away. The proof is in the fact that my friendships have lasted such a long time. I never experienced this as a child or as a young adult so it is refreshing and it fills me with happiness. When I was a child and a young adult, I struggled with reaching out to people so I really only had one or two friends in my life. I felt lonely much of the time but that was of my own making. Today I reach out to people, I ask them how they are doing, and I genuinely listen to what they have to say. This seems to work so I think I will have to continue to do so.

Today I will delight in the friendships I have as I reach out, ask, and listen. I am grateful.
